Dirtbusters Bio Oven Cleaner Spray is what I use. Here’s why.
What Is It?
Dirtbusters Bio Oven Cleaner is a non-caustic, bio-based oven cleaning spray. No Sodium Hydroxide — no caustic soda. That matters more than most people realise, and I’ll come back to that.
How I Use It
The key to getting the most out of any oven cleaner — bio or otherwise — is preparation. Before the spray goes on, I scrape out the worst of the baked-on carbon deposits with a professional scraper blade. Once the bulk of the loose material is removed, the bio spray goes on and I leave it to dwell. That dwell time is where the chemistry does its work — breaking down the grease so it wipes away rather than needing to be scrubbed off.
On a well-maintained domestic oven this process is straightforward. On a heavily soiled oven that hasn’t been properly cleaned in years, you repeat the process — spray, dwell, wipe, repeat — until you’re happy with the result.
It works on oven interiors, oven doors, glass, and I use it on AGAs too — spraying the top, the lids and the interior surfaces and leaving it to dwell while I work on other parts of the cooker.
Why Non-Caustic Matters
This is the bit most people don’t think about until it’s too late.
Caustic oven cleaners — anything containing Sodium Hydroxide — are powerful. They work fast and they look impressive. But on an AGA, Rayburn, Esse or any enamel-surfaced range cooker they cause permanent damage. The enamel dulls, a white bloom appears, and it doesn’t come off. I’ve seen it countless times — a well-meaning cleaner or housekeeper has sprayed Mr Muscle on an AGA and you can see exactly where it’s been, permanently marked into the enamel.
Dirtbusters Bio is safe on enamel. That’s not a minor point — for anyone with a range cooker it’s the difference between a clean oven and a permanently damaged one.
It’s also fume-free, which matters when you’re working in someone’s kitchen for hours. Caustic cleaners are unpleasant to work with — you need ventilation, you need to keep people out of the room. With Dirtbusters Bio you can crack on without gassing yourself or your customer.
Does It Work?
Yes. On regularly maintained ovens it’s excellent — spray, dwell, wipe, done. On heavily soiled ovens you need to put the work in but the product does its job. It’s not magic — nothing is when you’re dealing with years of baked-on grease — but combined with a good scraper blade and proper dwell time it delivers consistently good results.
The Verdict
Non-caustic, fume-free, safe on all oven surfaces including enamel range cookers, and it works. It’s what I use every day and what I recommend to anyone asking me what to clean their oven with.
If you’ve got a standard oven, it’s a great choice. If you’ve got an AGA, Rayburn or Esse — it’s the only sensible choice.
